Year 4/5

Welcome to Year 4/5

Welcome to Year 4/5 at Hazel Grove Primary School!

In this class, pupils benefit from being taught in mixed age groups – where children from different years learn together in the same classroom. This approach offers a range of advantages that support both academic progress and personal development:

  • Enhanced social skills: A mixed-age class encourages cooperation and broader friendships across age groups. Younger pupils gain confidence by learning alongside older peers, while older pupils develop mentoring skills and responsibility – which fosters a strong sense of community.
  • More flexible learning: Teachers of a mixed-age class can be more responsive to the support that pupils may need, irrespective of their age. This allows pupils to progress at their own pace and be challenged appropriately.

Important Information for Class 4/5BH

  • We are timetabled to have PE every Wednesday, so children need to wear their PE kit to school on this day.
  • Year 4 children go swimming on Fridays.
  • Year 5 children need to remember to bring in their brass instrument every Wednesday for music.
  • We encourage the children to read at least three times a week and write the date and pages read in their reading record. Please could an adult sign the reading record when the book is finished. We encourage the children to let us know when they need a new book, to develop their independence, and they are reminded of this every morning
  • We also encourage the children to use Times Tables Rockstars or use the following website: Times tables games – Learn them all here! if they have access to electronics. Alternatively, regular practice verbally or written would be helpful. This is particularly important for Year 4 children in preparation for the Multiplication Check in May.
  • Spellings are sent home on a Monday and will be tested the following Monday.
